Saltbush Courtyard

The Challenge

The garden had grown over many years and contained many layers of planting, paths, and small spaces. While rich in character, the layout had become unclear and difficult to move through. Important trees and established plants were hidden within dense growth. The challenge was to open the garden carefully without losing the memory and structure already present. Rather than demolish the garden, the aim was to edit it.

Saltbush clearing creates a quiet gathering space within the garden canopy.

The Gramina Response

The design focuses on selective clearing and the introduction of a simple path that connects the whole property. This path becomes the unifying element, guiding movement through a diverse and layered garden. At the centre, a clearing inspired by saltbush creates a quiet place to gather and sit. Low silver foliage planting defines the space while retaining the surrounding canopy. Across the garden, new seating, paths, and openings allow light and movement to return.

Winding gravel paths move through layered saltbush and productive garden beds.

The Garden Now

The garden reads as a series of connected moments rather than a dense tangle of planting. Winding paths lead to places to sit, read, and pause. Saltbush and other resilient plants create a calm silver palette through the garden. Productive beds sit comfortably alongside native planting along the sunnier edge. The result is a garden that feels both renewed and deeply rooted in its history.

Concept Plan - A new central courtyard circle is connected with new planting and paths

A quiet birdbath moment invites reflection and wildlife into the garden.

Dense silver foliage creates layered habitat and softness along the garden boundary.
