Frequently Asked Questions

Section 01 - About the Plans

  • What exactly do I get with a Gramina Garden Plan?

You receive a bespoke concept plan tailored to your site. It includes a site-specific layout, planting palette, materials, lighting approach, construction guidance, and any Additional Moments you select. It’s designed to give you a clear, cohesive vision that can be built by you or your contractor.

  • Is the plan customised to my specific site?

Yes. Although the themes are pre-developed, the concept layout is created specifically for your property using your dimensions, sun access, existing trees, and other unique characteristics of the site. The planting lists are also tailored to the climate where your property is located. It’s not a template dropped onto your site — it’s a tailored spatial plan and planting selection built from a consistent design framework.

  • Is each Garden Plan design different?

Yes. Each Gramina Garden Plan is built around a distinct garden theme, with its own curated palette of plants, materials, furniture elements, and lighting that create a specific mood and atmosphere. When you choose a plan, we apply that theme to your site — tailoring the layout to your garden while keeping the signature design elements consistent. Simply select the style that suits you best, and we’ll shape it to your space.

  • How detailed is the Garden Plan design?

You receive a clear concept design that shows the overall layout of your garden — including garden beds, open areas, lawn, key trees, paths, storage zones, driveway access, and any Additional Moments you’ve selected. Alongside this, the plan outlines your planting selection, recommended materials, furniture elements, lighting approach, and other theme-based details to give you a cohesive, buildable vision for your space.

  • What format does the plan come in?

You receive a beautifully designed digital PDF that you can view on any device or print at home. It’s clear, easy to share with contractors, and simple to take to nurseries or suppliers. We’re also working on an optional printed version of the plan, which will be available soon for those who prefer a physical booklet.

  • Are the drawings to scale?

Yes. Your concept plan is fully to scale with north shown, and all key details are proportioned accurately. This gives you and landscape contractors the clear information they need to understand the layout, interpret set-outs, and build the design confidently.

  • What happens after I receive my plan?

Gramina Garden Plans are a one-off design service. If you’d like to progress the design further, send us an email and we can make recommendations — including connecting you with a local landscape designer or builder to help keep the project moving forward.

Section 02 - Suitability

  • Is this suitable for new builds and established gardens?

Yes. Gramina plans work for both. New builds get a clear starting framework, and established gardens benefit from a refreshed layout that works around existing trees, structures, and constraints.

  • Can the plan suit my climate and conditions?

Yes. Every Gramina plan is tailored to your climate zone, with guidance on local conditions such as rain, heat, and frost. We select hardy, reliable plants that grow well in most Australian conditions, ensuring your garden is resilient and easy to maintain.

  • What if my garden is very small, steep, or an unusual shape?

No problem. The plans work for small spaces, larger blocks, tricky boundaries, and sloped sites. The concept layout is simply designed around the property you have.

  • Do I need any gardening or construction experience?

No. The plan is written for everyday homeowners. It’s clear enough for DIY and structured enough for contractors to follow without confusion.

  • What if I already have a landscaper?

Perfect — your Gramina plan becomes the design brief. Contractors often prefer starting with a clear, theme-based concept rather than building blind.

  • I live in a remote location — is a Gramina plan still suitable?

Yes. We design gardens for every Australian climate and location, including remote and regional areas. Your plan is tailored to your conditions and uses plants and materials that are widely available or have easy local alternatives.

  • Can I use this if I’m renting or planning to move?

Yes. Many elements within the Gramina plans are adaptable, removable, or low-impact, making them suitable for renters or anyone preparing a garden before sale. We also offer a dedicated Low-Fuss Rental theme designed specifically for simple, affordable improvements that don’t require major works.

  • Do you cover balconies or rooftop terraces?

Not yet — but we’re working on it. Balcony and rooftop-specific plans are in development and will be added to the Gramina range soon.

  • Can a Gramina Garden Plan be used for permits?

No. Gramina Garden Plans are concept-level landscape plans intended for homeowners, DIY builders, and landscape contractors to begin their design and construction process. They are not sutable for obtaining permits.

If you require approvals or certified documentation, please email us and we can discuss next steps, including connecting you with a local designer or builder who can help develop the design further.

Section 03 - Process & Timeline

  • How long does it take to receive my plan?

Most plans are delivered within 5 business days of receiving your site information.

  • What information do you need from me?

You’ll complete a simple form with your address and any additional information you’d like us to know. This gives us enough to shape a clear, site-specific concept.

  • What happens after I submit my details?

We review your information, confirm anything unclear, and begin your concept design. Once it's ready, you’ll receive your full Gramina Garden Plan as a digital PDF.

  • What if I would like more design work?

Gramina Garden Plans are a one-off design service. If you’d like to progress the design further, send us an email and we can make recommendations — including connecting you with a local landscape designer or builder to help keep the project moving forward.

Section 04 - Additional Moments

  • What are Additional Moments?

Additional Moments are optional add-ons you can include with your Gramina Garden Plan. After choosing your main plan, you simply select the extra features you’d like — such as a veggie patch, fire pit, water feature, or outdoor shower — and we integrate them directly into your concept layout. They provide the finishing touches that bring character, usability, and a sense of completeness to your garden.

  • Can I choose more than one Additional Moment?

Yes. You can select as many as you like, and they’ll be placed in your layout where they work best. Please note that we review each selection to make sure it suits your site — some Moments are larger and need adequate space. If anything needs clarification, we’ll get in touch via email.

  • Can I add Additional Moments later?

Gramina Garden Plans are a one-off design service, so adding new or different Additional Moments isn’t included after delivery. If you’d like to include more Moments, you’ll need to purchase a new plan with your updated selection.

  • Can I purchase Additional Moments without a Gramina Garden Plan?

No. Additional Moments can only be added as part of a Gramina Garden Plan. They’re designed to integrate directly into a tailored layout, so they aren’t offered as standalone products.

Section 05 - Construction and Practicalities

  • Do I need any gardening or construction experience?

No. The plan is written for everyday homeowners and is simple enough for DIY, while still being clear for contractors. That said, some parts of garden construction — like decks, walls, or structural elements — can be complex. If you’re unsure what’s achievable on your own, we recommend speaking with a local designer, builder or landscaper to understand which tasks are best handled by a professional.

  • Does the plan include detailed construction drawings?

No. Your Gramina Garden Plan is produced at a level of detail commonly understood in the industry as Concept Design — showing the overall look, feel, and arrangement of the garden, along with key elements, planting lists, and general guidance. It does not include detailed design or construction documentation for your property. If you’d like to understand the next steps in the construction process, please reach out via email and we can suggest options, including connecting you with a local landscape designer or builder.

  • Can I build the garden myself?

Yes. Many parts of the design can be installed by confident DIYers, especially planting, small paths, soil work, pots, and simple garden elements. More technical items may require a contractor.

  • Can I give this plan to a landscaper or builder?

Yes. Your Gramina plan is designed to be easy for contractors to interpret and use as a clear starting point. A landscaper or builder can take the concept layout, planting guidance, and installation notes and develop them into the next stage of design and construction for your garden.

  • Does the plan meet Australian Standards of construction?

Yes. Your plan includes installation notes that reference relevant Australian Standards, helping contractors build safely and to an expected level of quality.

  • What if my site needs drainage, retaining walls, or engineering?

These elements aren’t included in a Gramina plan. If your site requires technical input, we can recommend next steps — including connecting you with local designers, landscapers, engineers, or builders who can provide those services.

  • Are the materials easy to source?

Yes. All plants and materials in your Gramina plan are chosen for their availability, durability, and suitability for Australian gardens. Everything we specify can be sourced from local nurseries, landscape supply yards, hardware stores, or common online retailers, making the build process straightforward.

Section 06 - Plants and Climate

  • How are the plants selected for my garden?

Your plant list is tailored to your climate zone and conditions, using hardy, widely available species suited to Australian gardens. The selection is based on the Gramina Garden Plan you choose and is curated to create a consistent mood, feeling, and overall outcome that aligns with the intent of that plan.

  • Can I swap plants in the design?

The plants in each Gramina plan are selected through our experience for their success rate, availability, and ability to deliver the intended look and feel of the design. The planting palette is fixed for each plan, ensuring consistency and a clear outcome. You’re always welcome to make your own additions or substitutions based on your preferences, local availability, or specific site conditions.

  • Are the plants low-maintenance?

Yes. Gramina plant palettes focus on hardy, reliable species that are easy to care for and suited to a wide range of conditions. All plants require at least some maintenance — there’s no such thing as a completely no-maintenance garden — but the selections are chosen to keep ongoing care as simple as possible.

  • Will the plants suit my climate?

Yes. Every Gramina Garden Plan includes climate information relevant to your location, and all plant selections are matched to your region’s rainfall, temperature, and seasonal patterns. Gramina plans are designed to work across all Australian climates, from cooler temperate zones to hot, dry inland regions.

  • What if a plant on the list is unavailable?

Most plants we specify are common across Australian nurseries. If something is out of stock or seasonal, nurseries can easily recommend a close alternative with similar size, habit, and colour.

Section 07 - Pricing & Payments

  • What does the price include?

Your purchase includes a one-off, tailored concept design for your property — including a scaled layout, planting selection, materials, lighting approach, and integration of any Additional Moments you choose.

  • Are there any extra costs?

No. There are no hidden fees. GST is included.

  • Is this good value for money?

We think so. A typical landscape designer will usually charge several thousand dollars just for a concept design. Gramina gives you a tailored plan at a fraction of that cost — so yes, we’d say it’s pretty reasonably priced.

  • Do you offer refunds for a Gramina Garden Plan?

No. Once work has commenced on your plan, the service is considered delivered and is not refundable. Please make sure you’re confident in your selection before purchasing.

  • Do you offer discounts or promotions?

From time to time, we run limited promotions or introductory offers. These will be clearly shown on the website when available.

Section 08 - Using the Plan

  • How do I use the plan once I receive it?

Your Gramina plan is designed to be simple to follow — just review the layout, planting selection, materials, and lighting notes, then decide whether you’ll build it yourself, engage a contractor or a bit of both to take it to the next stage.

  • Can I give the plan to a landscaper or builder?

Yes. The concept plan is clear and easy for contractors to interpret. They can develop it into detailed design or construction drawings if needed and help you bring the garden to life.

  • Is the plan easy to understand if I’m not a designer?

Yes. The layout is drawn to scale and the notes are written in plain language, so you can confidently understand how the garden fits together without any technical experience.

  • Can I use the plan to get quotes?

You may be able to get rough, high-level pricing, but it won’t replace detailed drawings. Contractors can use the concept plan to discuss ballpark costs or next steps, but precise quotes may require further design or documentation.

  • What if I have a question while building the garden?

Gramina Garden Plans are a one-off design service. If you’d like help progressing the design or need support during the build, send us an email and we can make recommendations — including connecting you with a local landscape designer or builder to help keep the project moving forward.

  • Can I stage the garden over time?

Yes. Many people build their garden in parts — starting with planting or paths and adding bigger elements later. Your plan gives you a clear roadmap so you can build at your own pace.
